Applying to graduate school for economics

I'm spending my summer dealing with applications, GRE's, essays etc, so that I don't have to worry about it so much come autumn. This process is mostly discouraging and frustrating. The question of "how many schools to apply to" is difficult, and getting costly. The application fees charged by universities are really exclusionary.
